Dog Collars
Dog collars are the mark of a dog that’s owned, rather than one that runs wild. They serve a few purposes, all of which are very important to a pet. The first purpose of a collar is an attachment point. If you’ve ever walked a dog you know that most of them can get headstrong at some point. Without a physical restraint, some dogs would go chasing after cars, others would run up and make friends with every person they met, and still others would go rushing off to protect their owner from attack by innocuous objects such as trees and street signs.
The fact is a dog needs the restraint, but dogs are naturally lacking in a place to put a leash. You could tie a knot in the leash to slip around your dog’s head, but unless you know the right knots, you could end up choking the dog when it cinches down on their throat. So we settled on dog collars with a metal loop to hook a leach to instead.
The other vitally important function served by dog collars is pet identification. The collar is home to the ID tag that gives a pet’s name, along with contact information for the owner. This way if your pet is picked up by a stranger or animal control, they know how to contact you and return it.
