Dog FAQs

If I have children, should I get a certain type of dog?

There are some dogs that are known to be nippy. These breeds are a poor choice to have around children, as even the best child will try the patience of a dog at some point. Some parents worry about a large dog injuring their children, but in reality the larger breeds generally have a more laid back attitude than smaller breeds. They are also protective of their owners, which will include your children, so they can actually be an added layer of protection for your children, rather than a safety concern.

If I live in an apartment without much space to it, should I be concerned about what kind of dog I get?

In a word, yes. There are some breeds that require running room, and these breeds are better suited to outdoor life. A bigger concern than where you live is whether or not you exercise your dog. A greyhound, one of the breeds most notorious for running room, can be kept in an apartment so long as it gets daily exercise. This holds true for many breeds, if they get out every day and are allowed to stretch their legs, they will fare just fine in an apartment or small home.

I cannot seem to get my dog housebroken, what am I doing wrong?

The most common mistake owners make when housebreaking a pet is failing to adequately remove the scent of an accident. A dog will return to a spot that it has already urinated to go again, and if it can find the last accident it had, you’re far more likely to have another accident. Since most breeds have a much better sense of smell than humans do, you should clean the area until you cannot smell it even at close range, and then clean it once more for good measure.
